Report from XII EPCA Conference in Brno

XII European Personal Construct Association Conference took place in the historical city of Brno, Czech Republic, from 20th to 23rd of June. “Refresh Your Constructs” was the motto chosen for the conference, and that term that suited the multitude of papers and workshops presented perfectly. Constructivist metatheory is in itself supremely flexible and creative, and as such it relates easily to various areas of research and social practice. Amongst the participants there were constructivists from Great Britain, Ireland, Serbia, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic and Australia. The contributions touched upon subjects as varied as democracy, education, art, social networking, yoga, mathematics, and offered original PCP contributions and elaborations in each. All the contributions served to keep constructivist theory and practice on pace with ever-accelerating social change in the modern world, and refresh our own constructs so they adapt to that world and be as functional as possible.

The content of the conference was highlighted by over 10 interactive and intriguing workshops, which have, through collaborative action of the moderators and attendants, been a fruitful exercise of constructivism in action. The workshops included elaboration of dreams, various means of using qualitative grids, working with couples and families, using yoga in PCP framework, DIXIT visual cards in therapeutic practice, and so forth. A symposium dealing with integration of narrative psychology and PCP found its place on the conference program as well. Two keynote lectures were dedicated to an alternative approach to teaching mathematics (an approach that is highly compatible with PCP), as well as to a review of constructivist outlook on psychological disorders and it’s comparison to the approach taken by the new manual of psychological disorders (DSM-V).

In addition, this conference provided a significant number of young contributors a great space to share their ideas and experiences with older, more acknowledged colleagues and receive their valuable feedback

Pored toga, konferencija je predstvaljala i važnu priliku za znatan broj mladih izlagača da podele svoje ideje i iskustva sa starijim kolegama.

A significant contribution was made by the group from Serbian Constructivist Association, through interesting and diverse presentations and workshops. A high level of proficiency in using constructivist theory and a sound command of spoken English allowed our brave group to represent the constructivism in Serbia in a praiseworthy manner. Themes of our papers ranged from works debating the possibilities of interrelating PCP with discursive and narrative approaches, throughworkshops using qualitative grids and including bodywork in the constructivist therapy, all the way to the advantages of using constructivism in psychological work with chemo-ontological patients.

Program of the conference included trips to Villa Tugendhat and the city of Prague, as well as evening entertainment, in which main performers were the participants of the conference themselves. A friendly and relaxed atmosphere, along with singing and dancing, made the event lively and enjoyable to all the participants. It is important to mention that our Czech friends have, despite all the hardships usually associated with organizing of events like this, managed to maintain smooth flow and a high level of organization throughout the whole of the conference.

In the end, the conference was brought to an end with obligatory congratulations to the organizers and contributors, as well as the showcase of future PCP events, such as International Congress in London in 2015, and XIII EPCA Conference in Padua in 2016.
